Meta will spend hundreds of billions of dollars on building huge data centres with artificial intelligence in the United States. This was announced by the company’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, according to the BBC.
According to Zuckerberg, Meta is ‘investing hundreds of billions of dollars … in creating “superintelligence,”’ and that these data centres have been given ‘names that reflect their scale and impact.’
He noted that the first multi-gigawatt data centre, called Prometheus, is expected to be operational in 2026. One of the facilities will cover an area almost the size of Manhattan (59.1 square kilometres).
Meta has reportedly invested heavily in the development of ‘superintelligence’ — a technology that could surpass the smartest humans. The company, which earns most of its money from online advertising, generated more than $160 billion in revenue in 2024.
Zuckerberg said Meta is building several multi-gigawatt clusters, and that one cluster called Hyperion could scale to five gigawatts within a few years.
According to him, Prometheus will be built in Ohio, while Hyperion will be built in Louisiana and is expected to be fully operational by 2030.
