Tesla’s share of the U.S. auto market dropped in August to its lowest level in eight years, Reuters reports.
Elon Musk’s company, which once controlled more than 80% of the U.S. EV market, accounted for just 38% in August. For the first time since October 2017, Tesla’s share fell below 40%.
By comparison, Tesla EVs held 42% in July and nearly 49% in June. The decline is attributed to the growing number of competitors offering aggressive discounts and favorable leasing terms.
For instance, Hyundai, Honda, Kia, and Toyota boosted EV sales by 60–120% thanks to incentives, while Volkswagen’s ID.4 sales surged by more than 450% in July following special promotions.
Tesla also increased sales: in July, deliveries rose 7% to 53,816 vehicles. But that wasn’t enough to hold its market share. In August, sales grew again — up 3.1% — yet the overall market expanded much faster, by 14%.
Another factor behind Tesla’s decline is the lack of new models. The company’s most recent vehicle, the Cybertruck pickup, hasn’t matched the success of the Model 3 or Model Y, and the refreshed Model Y failed to meet expectations.
The situation is further complicated by reputational issues: Elon Musk’s political activities and his brief collaboration with U.S. President Donald Trump — which ended after a dispute in May — have negatively affected the brand’s perception among some American consumers.
