Agricultural trade between Ukraine and the European Union increased significantly in January–June 2026. In the first half of the year, total trade reached $8.55 billion, up $847 million, or 11%, compared with the same period last year. The figures were reported by the National Scientific Center “Institute of Agrarian Economics.”
The institute noted that the growth was driven primarily by higher Ukrainian exports. “The increase in exports (+$624 million) exceeded the rise in imports (+$221 million),” the institute explained. As a result, Ukraine’s positive agricultural trade balance increased to $3.47 billion.
Ukrainian agricultural producers traded most actively with Poland, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and France. These six countries account for around 70% of Ukraine’s total agri-food trade with the EU.
At the same time, some duty-free quotas are already being actively filled. As of early July, Ukraine had fully used its annual quota for wheat. High utilization rates were also recorded for:
The quota for ethanol was 64% utilized, honey — 61%, while sugar and sweet corn — 59%.
The new terms of trade in food products between Ukraine and the EU have been in effect since the end of 2025. They include changes to the volumes of quotas for duty-free exports.
The Institute of Agrarian Economics emphasized that logistics also affects the structure of trade. “The practical inability to export through its own maritime routes is prompting Ukrainian companies in the sector to make greater use of European transit routes,” the experts said.
According to the institute, Ukrainian agricultural businesses are currently being forced to partially restructure their logistics systems and increasingly rely on European routes to deliver products to international markets.
