The company Walmart continues to follow the advanced technology in the field of e-commerce and delivery.
Walmart has partnered with three drone manufacturers: Flytrex, Zipline and DroneUp, as well as with the large American network of clinical laboratories Quest Diagnostics.
According to the company, DroneUp drones have already made 57 flights with the average time of about 10 minutes and delivered 24 sets of the COVID-19 tests at home to customers.
In the press release, Tom Ward, Walmart’s senior vice president of the product for customers wrote: “Many years ago, our founder Sam Walton said: I have always been encouraged to oppose the system, to introduce the innovations, to go beyond what was before. This remains the guiding principle at Walmart to this day. As a pioneer in the field of universal barcodes and electronic scanning cash registers and finishing work in the field of the autonomous vehicles deliver, we are working to understand how these technologies can affect the future of our business and help us better to serve our customers.”
Walmart also noted that the tested drones run on the electricity, which is in line with the company’s long-term program to minimize harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
The company views this type of the delivery as fast, which is becoming a key factor in competition among e-commerce sellers. It is also convenient as a delivery of food or small parcels, and medical tests or medications to allow customers to stay at home and reduce contact with potentially sick people.
Tom Ward, senior vice president of the Walmart, said that in his view, technology of the automated drones “open huge opportunities.”
Ward said Walmart is in the process of the testing drone delivery, trying better understand what the consumers want and how much such services will cost. The company did not predict when drone delivery would become widely available in the United States.
