The American corporation The Walt Disney Company has announced the forthcoming closure of the animated studio Blue Sky Studios, which has created a number of world-famous cartoons. Bloomberg announced this on Tuesday, February 9, citing a company statement.
“Given the current economic situation, after much deliberation and evaluation, we have made a difficult decision to stop film production at Blue Sky Studios,” the statement said.
The studio will stop working in the next two months. Almost 450 people will lose their jobs.
Blue Sky Studios was founded in 1987 and has released more than 10 full-length animated films during its existence. Its most famous projects were the franchise films “Ice Age”, “Rio” and “Ferdinand”.
Blue Sky’s latest work was the animated film “Spies in Disguise”, released in 2019.
Disney, like many other entertainment companies, was badly affected by the coronavirus pandemic. Due to COVID-19, Disney theme parks were either closed or limited attendance. In addition, the releases of feature films were postponed. The corporation also owns Pixar and Disney studios.
In the past fiscal year, Disney lost $ 2.86 billion on sales of $ 65.4 billion.
