Back in 2016, Apple CEO Tim Cook called augmented reality (AR) a “new big market” comparing its size to the smartphone market.
According to most analysts, Apple smart glasses will be a new wearable device sold as an additional gadget to the iPhone. Apple itself does not give any details or disclose plans about its smart glasses, which have already been called Apple Glass in the media. Thus, everything we know today is collected from the information sources of employees, insiders and forecasts of analysts and market experts.
According to a Bloomberg report, the lenses on Apple smart glasses will have a holographic display and will show anything from texts, emails, cards or games to the owner’s field of vision. At the same time, Apple Glass, by analogy with the Apple Watch smartwatch, will have its own operating system.
According to an Apple Patently source, two Apple patents suggest that the company is working on an optical vision correction system in smart glasses able to replace some glass lenses that correct vision. According to the source, the Apple Glass system will correct many things from astigmatism to farsightedness and myopia.
Apple’s Patently assumption correlates well with the Apple’s desire to occupy a broad consumer healthcare market and achieve its goal of “making the greatest contribution to human development.” At present, Apple Watch already gives promising results in the field of heart disease testing and analysis of overall human activity.
As for the launching of Apple Glass, most analysts agree that their design will be similar to the classic glasses, and recharging will occur through a special case similar to charging AirPods.
Experts expect a lidar scanner on the Apple Glass lens which will scan the surrounding image to realistically overlay 3D images. At the same time, smart glasses are unlikely to have a camera.
Apple’s most famous analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo, recently wrote on Twitter that he did not believe that Apple Glass would appear this year at the company’s September event, expecting that the more likely date was 2022.
John Prosser, another Apple expert, also gives many correct predictions believing that the announcement of Apple Glass should appear in March-June next year.
At the same time, Prosser predicts that the company may announce the product long before its actual delivery, as in case of Apple Watch.
Other sources in the media believe that smart glasses will be released in 2023. As a result, the deadlines are likely to be reduced to the next three years.
