Nvidia faces challenges in supplying AI chips to China

22.07.2025 News

Nvidia has faced restrictions on the supply of the only AI chips allowed for export under the new US rules to China, Reuters reports.

Although the company announced plans to resume selling H20 chips in China this week, exports still require a licence from the US government. The ban, introduced in April, forced the company to cancel customer orders and abandon production quotas booked at TSMC facilities.

According to Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, the Taiwanese manufacturer has already switched H20 production lines to other chips for other customers. It may take up to nine months to resume H20 production.

Despite earlier statements about increasing H20 supplies, The Information’s sources claim that Nvidia has no plans to resume production of these chips, although there is no official confirmation or details. The company refused to comment on the situation.

At the same time, Nvidia has announced the development of a new RTX Pro GPU that will comply with current US export restrictions and is targeted specifically at the Chinese market.

Earlier it became known that Nvidia plans to launch a new AI chip for China at a much lower price than the H20 model banned in April. Mass production of the new product was supposed to start in June.

Nvidia’s losses due to US sanctions

China remains a key market for Nvidia, accounting for 13% of the company’s annual revenue. However, the US export restrictions have significantly affected the manufacturer’s position: Nvidia’s share of the Chinese market fell from 95% in 2022 to 50% today. The main competitor is Huawei with its own Ascend 910B chip.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that old models based on the Hopper architecture (on which the H20 is based) cannot be adapted to the new export rules. As a result of the ban, the company wrote off $5.5bn in inventory and gave up $15bn in potential sales.
