Intel announced a breakthrough in transistor technology that will enhance the performance of the new chips by 20%

18.08.2020 News

At the annual press conference as part of “Architecture Day 2020”, Intel has announced improvements in the production of new graphics processors for laptops, PCs and server processors.

Positive news was received in not the best time for the company Intel, since July 23, after the close of Thursday, shares fell by more than 20%, after than investors were disappointed by the announcement of a delay in the release of 7-nm. next-generation chips for six months and weak forecasts for the technology giant.

However, Intel declined from their ancient principles of self-production, declaring a contract with “outsourcing production of new chips” based in Taiwan TSMC.

Some analysts and market experts saw this as a “loss of Intel’s competitive position,” which is currently inferior to Nvidia and AMD. Given that both companies rely on TSMC’s technology leadership, their technology is ahead of Intel’s alternative offerings.

At Thursday’s conference, Intel announced new strategies for technological innovation in several areas, but the edition of a new graphics processors with their use will take place only at the end of this year and in 2021. Thereby, Intel is losing a very important factor of time and market share.

Intel has unveiled details of its new line of processors for Tiger Lake laptops, Alder Lake’s next-generation PC processors, and improvements of “inside hub” that can improve performance and reduce power consumption.

Intel engineering team has developed a new way to manufacture transistors and will use a new material for improving capacitors. Managers of Intel introduced a new core microarchitecture CPU, known as Willow Cove and new architecture Xe-LP.

Chief Architect of Intel Raja Koduri said that these changes should lead to increased productivity of new next-generation graphics processors to 20%.

Potentially, these improvements should help Intel to compete with AMD and Nvidia.
