NASA has provided to Nokia with $ 14.1 million to deploy 4G (LTE) network on the moon. The US space agency noted that telecommunications networks of this standard will be able to provide more reliable than radio signals, communication on the Earth’s satellite, where it is planned to build the lunar base by 2028.
NASA suggests that the 4G cellular standard will replace the radio standards on the Moon and provide more reliable long-distance communication than the radio communication. Later, monthly 4G can be upgraded to the 5G standard, as well as terrestrial. NASA plans to build the lunar base by 2028 and has allocated $ 370 million to deploy the advanced technology that will be needed to operate the base on the moon. More than 12 innovative companies will receive the funds, among the technologies ordered by the space agency – in addition to the LTE-communication, remote production of the electricity, cryogenic freezing, robotic developments, technologies for the safe landing on the moon and others.
Nokia will develop the network solutions for the lunar surface by Bell Labs in partnership with the engineering company Intuitive Machines, which specializes in the space travel. According to the joking assumption of the representative of the parent company Bell Labs AT&T John Oliver, the cellular communication on the Moon will be better than on the Earth, because there are no trees, buildings and TV towers. According to him, the cellular network on the Moon will need to be designed so that it can withstand the specific lunar conditions – extreme temperatures, radiation and space vacuum. The lunar network must be operational during the landings and the launches despite the vibration during them.
Bell Labs notes that astronauts will be able to use the wireless network to transmit the data, control of the movements on the Moon, real-time navigation on the lunar geography (such as Google Maps for the moon) and the streaming high-definition video. This will allow you to get better quality of the images from astronauts who jumping on the lunar surface. In contrast to the Earth, where towers with generators of energy and communication signals are used for 4G networks, for deployment on the Moon will apply technology developed by the Bell Labs small cells (WTO). It has already been tested in the ground to deploy 5G networks. The technology of small cells is limited in the range, but less energy-intensive and much lighter and smaller, which will allow it to be placed on the spacecraft.
Last week, seven countries joined the US lunar program Artemis, which manages by NASA. NASA has announced the agreements about the flights to the moon and its development by man with Australia, Britain, Italy, Luxembourg, Canada, the UAE and Japan. In May, NASA presented a set of rules of the Artemis Accords – about the interaction of countries in the development of the Moon and the outer space and invited all countries to join it. The proposed US rules are based on the principles of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. According to the plans of the administration of US President Donald Trump, manned flights to the moon will resume in 2024. The first lunar program in the United States was named after the ancient Greek god Apollo, according on it in 60-70th years of the last century was committed six landing of man on the moon. The new Artemis program is named after Artemis, goddess of fertility and twin sister of the god Apollo.
According to NASA plans, the development of the SLS super heavy missile and the Orion manned spacecraft should be completed in 2020, after which its first launch will take place. This version of the rocket can launch 27 tons of payload into the orbit around the moon. Its creation has priority over the completion of the Block 1B version of the SLS super heavy rocket, which will be able to deliver 37 tons of payload to the moon. Without Block 1B, it is impossible to deliver astronauts to the Earth’s satellite and to return them. In 2022, it is planned to begin building the space station in the lunar orbit LGS (Lunar Gateway Station), as well as the flight of the Moon by a crew on Orion, launched into space by the SLS carrier. D 2024 planned completion of the station. In parallel, the study of the Moon with probes and moonwalkers will be conducted to select the landing site. It is also planned to build the lunar station LGS, which will be the springboard for travel to the moon and Mars. A total of 14 commercial launches of SpaceX Crew Dragon and Boeing Starliner (apparently some of them on the ISS), as well as 5 manned expeditions on the ship Orion. 2028 is called the date of astronauts landing on the moon.
