Facebook will block news to Australians

18.02.2021 News

Facebook in Australia will block the ability to view and share the news. The head of the Australian branch of the company William Easton stated this on Thursday, February 18.

This decision is a response to the bill of the Australian government, which will force Google and Facebook to pay the media for the original content. Easton believes this sets a precedent when the government decides how much a party that already benefits from the free service pays.

“The proposed law fundamentally misunderstands the relationship between our platform and the authors who use it to share news content. This has left us with a tough choice: to try to abide by a law that ignores the realities of that relationship or not allow news on our platform in Australia. We choose the latter, “Easton said.
