Chinese automaker BYD has announced plans to bring its premium brand, Yangwang, to the European market. The news was confirmed by the company’s Vice President, Stella Li, in a comment to Autocar. With this move, BYD will become the first Chinese manufacturer to attempt entry into the ultra-luxury car segment in Europe.
Launched in 2022, Yangwang sits at the top of BYD’s model hierarchy, above the main lineup and the premium sub-brand Denza. The brand’s first models are the U8 SUV and the U9 electric supercar. Both vehicles have been sold in China for nearly two years, with the U8 priced around $160,000 and the U9 at approximately $270,000.
Despite showcasing both models at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, BYD had not previously confirmed any official plans for a European debut. It is now reported that after launching the Denza brand (expected early next year), Yangwang will also enter the European market.
Final pricing for the European versions has not been disclosed. However, due to the cost of adapting vehicles for right-hand drive and a 17% tariff on EV imports from China, Yangwang is unlikely to drastically undercut established competitors like Bentley, Porsche, or Ferrari.
Klarna shares jumped 30% during the long-awaited debut in New York, valuing the Swedish fintech at $19.65 billion.
