Italy Investigates Meta Over AI Feature in WhatsApp

01.08.2025 News

The Italian antitrust authority (AGCM) has launched an investigation into Meta over the artificial intelligence feature in the WhatsApp messenger. Italy suspects that Meta abused its dominant position in the messaging market by pre-installing the AI function without obtaining users’ consent, according to Euractiv.

On Tuesday, July 29, antitrust officials, accompanied by financial police experts, conducted a raid at Meta’s Italian branch.

A Meta spokesperson stated that the company is “fully cooperating with the Italian antitrust authority.”

“Providing free access to our AI features in WhatsApp gives millions of Italians the opportunity to use AI in a space they already know,” the spokesperson added.

Meta claims that using AI is entirely optional. However, the Italian regulator says that since March 2025, Meta AI has been integrating its AI services “in conjunction with the WhatsApp service without prior user consent.”

The AI service has already come under scrutiny in several other European countries.

Meta recently delayed the rollout of its AI platform after Ireland’s data protection authority raised concerns regarding the use of personal data.
