Apple has intensified work on its own search service, which will become a competitor to Google, writes the Financial Times, citing interlocutors in the mobile industry.
One of the signs of this, the interlocutors called the fact that after updating the iOS operating system, Apple began to show its own search results and provide direct links to sites when users enter search queries on the home screen of the smartphone. Earlier, the company turned to Google services.
In 2018, Apple’s top management was joined by John Giannandrea, who previously led Google’s search services, reminds FT. Today, Apple is actively looking for search engine engineers to “define and implement architecture with Apple’s innovative search technology,” edition of vacancy publication noted.
Search marketing experts also note the growing activity of Applebot, the company’s search engine, which is used to create a large database of online materials that form the basis of any search engine. Digital marketing expert Sugantan Mohanadasan told FT that in recent weeks, Applebot has appeared on its customers’ sites “an incredible number of times.” “When the scanning speed increases, it means that they want to gather more information,” Mohanadasan said.
In addition, according to the Financial Times, in its own search engine Apple offers not only links to sites, but also recommendations generated based on frequent user requests. This suggests that the company collects and processes data from iPhone owners to improve its search service, the newspaper noted.
Apple declined to comment.
The company’s increased interest in its own search engine may be due to a recent lawsuit filed by the US Department of Justice against Google. The Ministry of Justice accused the company of monopoly, citing agreements with Apple, which allow Google to be a de facto exclusive search engine in the Safari browser and other search tools of the corporation (Spotlight Search). According to the agency, Google pays from $ 8 billion to $ 12 billion annually for this opportunity.
