Ukraine Nearly Halves Salt Imports Since the Start of the Year

30.07.2025 News

In the first half of 2025, Ukraine significantly reduced its salt imports. Since the beginning of the year, 211,692 tons of salt were imported — a 45.88% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year.

According to statistics, Ukraine’s expenditures on salt purchases from foreign markets fell by 48.46% in H1 2025 — to $26.919 million, down from $52.225 million during the same period in 2024.

The main suppliers were:

  • Egypt, accounting for 46.09% of total imports (worth $12.407 million),

  • Turkey — 17.57% ($4.730 million),

  • Romania — 13.41% ($3.611 million).

Back in 2021, Ukraine exported 710.04 thousand tons of salt worth $28.32 million. In 2022, salt exports plummeted fivefold in volume — to 142.038 thousand tons, with revenues dropping to $3.82 million.

Top buyers of Ukrainian salt in 2021 included:

  • Poland (39.1%),

  • Hungary (27.4%),

  • Romania (7.3%).

In 2021, Ukraine also imported 142.81 thousand tons of salt worth $12.92 million.

However, in April 2022, following the occupation of Ukraine’s largest salt producer — Artemsil — the country virtually ceased salt exports and became a net importer.
