German automaker Volkswagen will invest about 73 billion euros over the next five years in electrification, hybrid powertrains and digital technology, the company said in a statement following a meeting of the supervisory board.
In particular, about 35 billion euros are planned to be spent on electric cars on battery power, about 11 billion – on the development of hybrid versions of existing models, and Volkswagen’s investment in digitalization should double to 27 billion euros.
“The share of investment in technology of the future has increased to about 50% of the total investment of 150 billion euros from 40% in the previous plan,” the company said.
Volkswagen also plans to produce about 70 models of electric cars by 2030.
“About 20 of them are already in the process and another 50 will be released later,” the company said.
And its plan is to produce about 26 million electric cars by 2030. In addition, by the end of the decade it is planned to release about 60 hybrid models, a little more than half of which are already produced. Thus, according to the estimates, about 7 million hybrid cars will be produced during the same period.
