Canada will join its allies in lowering the price cap on Russian oil, according to a statement from the Canadian Ministry of Finance, Reuters reports.
At the government’s initiative, the limit for seaborne shipments of oil of Russian origin will be reduced from $60 to $47.60 per barrel.
The decision is coordinated with the EU and the UK, which announced the same step in July in order to cut Russia’s oil revenues and increase pressure on Moscow over its war against Ukraine.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne emphasized that lowering the price cap restricts a key source of funding for Russia’s illegal war.
