Delta Air Lines intends to lay off about two thousand pilots

26.08.2020 News

During the pandemic, Delta lost three-quarters of its revenue over the same period last year. The company can avoid layoffs if management and the trade unions will be able to conclude an agreement to cut costs, and the White House will continue to provide subsidies to airlines.

Currently, the airline employs 11,200 pilots. Back in May, Delta warned employees about possible large-scale reductions. Like other airlines, Delta has encouraged employees to take advantage of retirement and layoffs programs, one of which includes a good retirement package for employees who have worked more than 25 years. Despite the fact that some employees preferred these programs, this was not enough to prevent layoffs.

The global aviation industry is trying to recover from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic. Earlier, US airlines warned the authorities that they would have to lay off tens of thousands of employees after running out of $ 25 billion allocated from US government incentive funds. These funds, which covered employees’ wages during downtime, were supposed to help carriers survive the pandemic and save jobs, but demand for domestic flights in America is very low, and international traffic is still blocked in most countries.
