Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has officially inaugurated the New Delta Project, an agricultural initiative aimed at expanding farmland through desert reclamation. This was reported by UkrAgroConsult.
The opening ceremony took place during the 2026 wheat harvest on newly cultivated fields west of the Nile Delta.
According to the Egyptian government, the project is the largest land reclamation initiative in the country’s history. In the long term, the area of newly developed agricultural land is expected to reach 2.2 million feddans (approximately 9,000 square kilometers). Egypt plans to increase its cultivated land area by around 15% and focus on growing wheat, corn, vegetables, as well as export crops such as olives and figs.
Total investments have already reached about 800 billion Egyptian pounds (more than $15 billion). The funds are being used for land preparation, construction of grain storage facilities, industrial zones, and new transportation corridors linking desert areas with the Nile Valley and the country’s ports.
Authorities also expect the project to create more than 2 million jobs.
A key element of the project is its water supply system, described as an “artificial river.” Water from drainage canals in the Nile Delta will be directed to the El Hammam treatment complex on the Mediterranean coast, where up to 7.5 million cubic meters of water are purified daily. The water will then be transported through a 170-kilometer canal and 13 pumping stations into desert regions.
The Egyptian government views the project as part of its broader food security strategy amid global crises following the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing wars.
At the same time, environmentalists and human rights groups have expressed concerns about the system’s high energy consumption, substantial state spending, and the concentration of control over the project within structures linked to the military.
