American businessman Elon Musk has lost his lawsuit against OpenAI and its CEO Sam Altman, whom he accused of abandoning the nonprofit mission of the organization they originally created together. This was reported on Monday, May 18, by Reuters.
The Federal Court ruled that the artificial intelligence company bears no liability toward Musk for allegedly deviating from its original mission of working for the benefit of humanity. The jury also determined that Musk filed the lawsuit too late. Jurors deliberated for less than two hours.
The trial is considered a critical moment for the future of OpenAI and the artificial intelligence industry as a whole — both regarding how AI should be used and who should benefit from the technology.
The ruling clears the way for OpenAI toward a potential initial public offering (IPO), which could value the company at $1 trillion. At the same time, the public face of the company, CEO Sam Altman, may still face reputational consequences due to highly personal testimony during the proceedings, including statements from several witnesses who called him a liar.
After the verdict was announced, Musk’s lawyers stated in court that he reserves the right to appeal. Speaking to reporters afterward, Musk’s attorney Marc Toberoff said the businessman would have strong grounds for challenging the decision.
“This is not the end. A ruling based on statutes of limitations has both factual and serious legal components,” he said.
U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers, who presided over the case, stated in court that Musk could face difficulties in filing an appeal because the statute of limitations had effectively expired by the time the lawsuit was submitted.
As is known, Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, later left the company following a dispute related to its transition toward commercial operations.
