German defense company Rheinmetall and U.S. defense giant Lockheed Martin have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a joint production facility for ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles in Germany. The agreement was signed during the Defence Industry Forum held alongside the NATO Summit in Ankara, according to Lockheed Martin.
“With the support of the governments of the United States and Germany, this agreement marks the next step toward establishing a joint venture that will become Europe’s first center of excellence for the production, integration, and distribution of ATACMS missiles for NATO member states and European allies,” the company said in a statement.
Jay Pittman, President of Lockheed Martin International, described the agreement as “a landmark moment” for European security and defense-industrial cooperation among allied nations.
“By combining Lockheed Martin’s unmatched expertise in missile technology with Rheinmetall’s advanced manufacturing capabilities, we will deliver proven, combat-tested capabilities to our allies more rapidly and efficiently,” Pittman said.
Armin Papperger, Chief Executive Officer of Rheinmetall, announced that the company intends to manufacture ATACMS missiles at its facility in Unterlüß, Germany.
“By establishing ATACMS production at Rheinmetall’s Unterlüß site, we are creating new capabilities for Germany and Europe, ensuring a reliable supply for our customers, and strengthening our strategic defense autonomy,” Papperger said. “We are honored that Rheinmetall has been selected to establish and operate the first—and only—ATACMS guided missile production facility outside the United States.”
