The American company Pfizer and the German BioNTech have applied to the European Medicines Agency for registration of their coronavirus vaccine. The announcement was published on the BioNTech website.
“On Monday, November 30, Pfizer and BioNTech filed a formal application with the European Medicines Agency for a conditional authorization to use their COVID-19 candidate vaccine BNT162b2,” the companies said in a joint statement.
If the EU Medicines Agency decides that the benefits of a candidate vaccine outweigh the risks, it recommends the drug to be authorized. This will allow to start using the drug in Europe by the end of 2020.
Bloomberg and the Financial Times reported that the UK could be the first country to approve a coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer and BioNtech. According to them, the drug can be approved “in the coming days”, deliveries will begin within a few hours after obtaining permission, and the first vaccinations will be made from December 7.
