Tesla is facing its first federal trial over a fatal crash involving its Autopilot system. Plaintiffs are seeking $345 million in damages—$109 million in compensation and $236 million in punitive damages.
The case is being heard in a federal court in Florida. The crash occurred in 2019 in Key Largo when George McGee, driving a Tesla Model S using the Enhanced Autopilot feature, became distracted by his phone and, traveling at 100 km/h (62 mph), struck a couple standing beside their vehicle. The collision killed 22-year-old Naibel Benavides and seriously injured her boyfriend, Dillon Angulo.
Plaintiffs accuse Tesla of dangerous defects in the Autopilot system, arguing that it should have been restricted to roads where it can operate safely. Their lawyers emphasize that Elon Musk and Tesla overstated the safety and capabilities of the system, encouraging drivers to rely on it excessively.
Tesla, in response, claims it clearly warned users of the system’s limitations and asserts that the driver is responsible.
While Tesla typically settles such cases out of court, this lawsuit has proceeded to trial. Judge Beth Bloom noted that “a jury could find Tesla’s conduct to be reckless disregard for human life in the pursuit of profit.”
