In Italy, Google was fined 102 million euros

14.05.2021 News

The Italian Antimonopoly Service has fined the American corporation Google more than 102 million euros for abusing its dominant position in the market.

“The Italian Antimonopoly Service has fined Alphabet Inc., Google LLC and Google Italy S.r.l. more than 100 million euros (102,084,433.91) for violating Article 102 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union,” the statement said.

It is noted that Google has been punished for refusing to place an application in the Google Play store to search for charging stations for electric vehicles. The agency considers such behavior to be an abuse of a dominant position in the market.

The Antimonopoly Service also ordered “Google to include the Android application Enel X in Android Auto for the use of services related to recharging electric vehicles.”

The agency notes that, according to him, the American corporation “did not allow Enel X Italia to develop a version of its application JuicePass, compatible with Android Auto.” Thus, Google “unfairly limited the opportunities for end users to use the Enel X Italia application while driving and recharging an electric vehicle.”

Italian officials note that Google controls the market through its Android operating system and Google Play store. In Italy, 75% of smartphones run on Android, which means Google can control developer access to the end user. Which, according to antitrust officials, happened with the application to find chargers for electric cars.
