Mitsubishi Motors has announced a large-scale recall of 91,697 vehicles in the U.S., covering both standard Outlander models and plug-in hybrid versions, Reuters reports. According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the issue involves the rear liftgate.
The defect is linked to the brackets that support the tailgate. Due to their faultiness, the liftgate may suddenly fall without warning, posing a risk of injury to people nearby. While no injuries have been reported so far, the manufacturer decided to act proactively and carry out a preventive recall.
Mitsubishi stressed that this step is aimed solely at preventing potential incidents. At the same time, for many owners the news came as a surprise, since the brand is often associated with reliability.
