Hyundai Motor Company and General Motors have unveiled initial plans for five jointly developed vehicles.
Four of the vehicles — a compact crossover, a sedan, a pickup truck, and a mid-size pickup — are targeted at markets in Central and South America. All models will be available with both gasoline engines and hybrid powertrains.
The fifth project is an electric commercial van, which is expected to be produced in the U.S. no earlier than 2028.
A division of responsibilities has already been established: GM will develop the platform for the mid-size pickup truck, while Hyundai will focus on compact vehicles and the electric van.
Despite sharing architectures, each model will feature unique exterior and interior designs to preserve the distinctive brand identity of each automaker.
Engineering and design work for the Latin American models is already underway. According to company forecasts, the combined annual sales of the five new models could exceed 800,000 units once full production capacity is reached.
In addition to co-developing the vehicles, the companies also plan to collaborate on procurement in North and South America — from logistics to raw materials and complex systems. Another area of cooperation will be the exploration of environmentally friendly steel production, in line with both manufacturers’ commitments to reducing their carbon footprint.
