AstraZeneca to Build the World’s Largest Pharmaceutical Plant in the U.S.

25.07.2025 News

British pharmaceutical giant AstraZeneca plans to invest $50 billion to expand its presence in the United States, including the construction of the world’s largest manufacturing hub in the state of Virginia, according to CNBC.

By 2030, the company intends to direct $50 billion toward the development of its research and manufacturing capabilities in the U.S. The flagship facility will be a new plant in Virginia focused on producing innovative medicines for weight management and metabolic disorders, including an oral GLP-1–based drug for obesity treatment.

The facility is expected to become the largest pharmaceutical manufacturing site globally. It will integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation, and data analytics to enhance production efficiency.

In addition, AstraZeneca plans to scale its operations in cell therapy across several states, including Maryland, Massachusetts, California, Indiana, and Texas. This expansion strategy is expected to create tens of thousands of new jobs.

According to CEO Pascal Soriot, the investment demonstrates the company’s confidence in the U.S. biopharmaceutical ecosystem. It also supports AstraZeneca’s ambitious goal to increase its annual revenue to $80 billion — with half of that projected to come from the U.S. market.
