Amazon is beginning the expansion in the fitness tracker market with the release of its first Halo fitness tracker and fitness app.
The offer from Amazon will compete with the existing world leader in the device market – Apple’s smart watch – Apple Watch, with a fitness tracker and a smart watch from Fitbit, which also offers subscription services, as well as a smart watch from Garmin.
According to the research firm of International Data Corp., Apple took a 29.3% share of the particular global market in the first quarter of 2020. Apple also plans to release a new online fitness service Seymour.
The launch of Halo could potentially bring Amazon significant profits, considering that according to the assessment of the world’s leading research and consulting company in the field of information technology of Gartner, the fast-growing wearable device market will reach $ 50 billion in 2020.
Amazon announced that Halo bracelet will cost $ 99.99 and the subscription of application – $ 3.99 per month, while during the early access period, which began on Thursday, buyers have the opportunity to purchase a bracelet and a six-month subscription even cheaper – at a price of $ 64.99.
When buying a tracker, buyers can choose one of three colors of a fabric strap, other fabric straps are available for $ 19.99 and silicone sports straps for $ 15.99 (only 15 additional colors).
Halo tracker the customer can buy only with a subscription, but the price is lower than similar offers from other companies.
For example, Fitbit fitness trackers cost from $ 70 to $ 170, and smart Fitbit watches – from $ 160 to $ 330, at the same time, the Fitbit Premium subscription, which, among other things, provides users with video training, fitness programs with a guide and a personalized “health report”, costs $ 10 per month or $ 80 per year.
Apple Watch Series 3 starts at $ 199, while the price of a new Watch Series 5 – from $ 399.
Amazon also reported about the opportunity to get a tracker and three years of free subscription for users who are willing to share their health information with the life insurance company John Hancock Life Insurance Company.
Otherwise, Amazon promises not to use information from devices for advertising, e-commerce, etc., photo recordings and user voices are also not stored on Amazon’s cloud servers and other third-party companies do not have access to them.
If Amazon can gain the trust of users and ensure confidentiality, while proving that it can improve people’s health care over time, as well as this could open up a huge new revenue streams for the company.
