UK-based mining company Anglo American and Canada’s Teck Resources have reached a merger agreement, the Financial Times reports.
Under the deal, Anglo American will hold 62.4% of the combined company, while Teck shareholders will own the remainder.
The new company, to be called Anglo Teck, is expected to rank among the world’s top five copper producers with a market value of $53 billion.
Its headquarters will be in Vancouver, Canada, while maintaining offices in London and Johannesburg. Anglo Teck will be listed on the stock exchanges in London, Johannesburg, Toronto, and New York. Leadership will include representatives from both companies: Duncan Wanblad (Anglo American) will serve as CEO, with Jonathan Price (Teck) as deputy CEO.
More than 70% of the company’s business will focus on copper — a critical metal for electric vehicles, renewable energy, and digital technologies. Key assets include six world-class copper mines in Chile, Peru, and Canada, as well as one of the world’s largest zinc mines in the US. Anglo Teck will also continue developing major projects in Canada, Chile, Peru, Mexico, the US, and Finland.
The merger still requires regulatory approval, with the process expected to take 12–18 months.
Last year, Anglo American produced 770,000 tonnes of copper, while Teck is targeting up to 525,000 tonnes this year, with significant expansion planned by the end of the decade.
Both companies already share stakes in giant copper deposits in Chile — Collahuasi and Quebrada Blanca — which will now be consolidated under the merger.
