IT giant Google and Singapore’s state-owned investment company Temasek have invested in Indonesia’s largest online store Tokopedia, writes Nikkei Asian Review. The amount of investments is not disclosed. In October, Bloomberg reported that Tokopedia was going to raise about $ 350 million from Google and Temasek.
This is Google’s second investment in the Indonesian unicorn. In 2018, the company invested in its subsidiary company Gojek. It is a service that provides taxi services, delivers food, makes digital payments.
According to documents submitted to the Indonesian Ministry of Law and Human Rights on November 4, Google owns 1.6% of Tokopedia and its subsidiary Temasek, Anderson Investments, owns 3.3%. Shares of Tokopedia owned by Google are valued at Rs 16.7 billion ($ 1.1 million) and shares owned by Anderson Investments at Rs 33.4 billion ($ 2.2 million).
The Google deal is the technology company’s third U.S. investment in a major Indonesian player this year. Earlier, Microsoft invested in a subsidiary of Tokopedia – online store Bukalapak, while Facebook and electronic payment system PayPal invested in Gojek.
