Apple is cutting more than 200 jobs across teams working on its Siri voice assistant, Vision Pro headset and software. The company is shifting its focus toward new devices and artificial intelligence, Bloomberg reports.
Around 100 positions will be eliminated in the Vision Pro division, with another 100 or so cuts affecting Siri and software teams. Changes will also affect the Intelligent Systems Experience group, which is responsible for a range of AI features across Apple devices.
The company is largely shutting down the Vision Pro team focused on developing games for the headset, while also reducing the division responsible for creating immersive video content for the device.
Apple confirmed the changes, saying it is restructuring teams to “grow the business and deliver the best experience for users.”
The reorganization will create new positions, but some existing roles will be eliminated. Apple also said it would support employees during the transition, including by allowing them to apply for other positions within the company.
The cuts to the Siri team are linked to preparations for a new AI-powered version of the voice assistant that will run on an updated technical architecture. The transition requires different expertise, prompting Apple to eliminate some positions while creating new ones.
The restructuring of the Intelligent Systems Experience group is related to the development of AI features across Apple’s apps, services and devices. The company is reorganizing teams around its new priorities and aims to accelerate development.
In the Vision Pro division, Apple is adjusting its priorities based on how users are actually using the device and plans to allocate more resources to future products.
Immersive video was one of the key selling points for the Vision Pro following its launch in February 2024. However, producing such content is expensive, while the limited number of active headset users makes it difficult to recoup production costs.
Apple is not abandoning immersive video entirely. The company plans to produce less of this content in-house and rely more on third-party developers.
Vision Pro and the visionOS operating system will continue to be developed, Apple said. In the near term, however, the company will focus on developing smart glasses that will not support immersive video or advanced gaming capabilities.
According to Bloomberg, Apple is considering releasing a new Vision Pro model no earlier than late 2028.
