Natural gas reserves in Ukraine’s underground gas storage facilities (UGS) have exceeded 9 bcm. The storages are 29.2% full. This is evidenced by ExPro data.
Compared to last year, the storage facilities store 13.9% or 1.45 bcm less gas.
It is noted that this year’s reserves remain the lowest in at least the last 12 years, but the gap with last year is decreasing. Thus, for the first time since the beginning of this year’s injection season, the gap with last year fell below 15%.
Gas injection volumes remain significantly higher than last year. Thus, since the beginning of July, more than 940 million cubic metres of natural gas have been pumped into Ukrainian underground storage facilities, 1.9 times more than in the same period last year.
In total, gas is expected to be pumped into the storages in July at over 1.7 bcm, which will be the highest monthly injection volume in two years, since August 2023.
By the start of the next heating season (1 November), Ukraine needs to accumulate at least 13 bcm of natural gas in storage facilities. This means that about 4 bcm more needs to be pumped in.
