Near the village of Ulken in Kazakhstan, work has begun on preparing project documentation and determining the optimal site for the country’s first nuclear power plant.
The launch of the project was attended by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev and Chairman of the Kazakhstan Atomic Energy Agency Almasadam Satkaliyev.
Drilling of the first exploratory well and collection of soil samples are already underway. According to Rosatom representatives, these studies will help assess the site’s seismic resistance, hydrogeological characteristics, and other parameters necessary for safe design.
As part of the first stage, at least 50 wells with depths ranging from 30 to 120 meters are planned to be drilled. Based on the collected data, the exact location of the NPP will be determined.
Engineering preparation is expected to last about 18 months. At least three alternative sites within the Zhambyl district of the Almaty region are also being studied.
Preparatory work is being carried out by Rosatom’s subsidiary, JSC Atomenergoproekt, in cooperation with Kazakhstani organizations. The research includes a detailed study of the geological, seismic, hydrological, and man-made characteristics of the area.
According to Almasadam Satkaliyev, the construction of the nuclear power plant could cost $14–15 billion, with an additional $1 billion allocated for infrastructure and social facilities near the station. A preliminary feasibility study is expected to be completed by December 2025.
