Volvo has announced the start of production of its fully electric ES90 for European markets — one of the company’s most significant milestones on its path to phasing out internal combustion engine vehicles entirely.
When the EV was unveiled in March, the automaker said it did not belong to standard vehicle classes, instead defining its own category by blending the elegance of a sedan, the adaptability of a fastback, and the spaciousness of a crossover.
“The fully electric ES90 marks a step into a new era of safety, sustainability, and human-centric technology. With its production launch, we reaffirm our commitment to an all-electric future and demonstrate our ability to meet customer expectations,” said Francesca Gamboni, Head of Operations at Volvo Cars.
The model is being built at Volvo’s Chengdu plant, which operates on climate-neutral energy. According to the company, the ES90 has one of the lowest carbon footprints of any Volvo vehicle to date, making it a key step in the brand’s sustainability strategy.
First deliveries to customers are expected by the end of this year, with the model to later roll out to major Asia-Pacific markets.
