Owners of the Volkswagen ID.3 in the UK will have to pay extra to unlock the full potential of their cars, Electrek reports. On the official site, the ID.3 Pro and Pro S are listed with 201 hp, but access to the maximum 228 hp is now offered only for an additional fee.
The upgrade can be activated in two ways: by subscribing for £16.50 per month ($22) or by making a one-time payment of £649 ($880). The one-time payment is tied to the vehicle itself, meaning the feature will remain available to the next owner if the car is sold.
Volkswagen notes that the power increase does not affect the driving range. This model is not entirely new: in 2022, BMW attempted to charge $18 per month for heated seats but dropped the idea after negative backlash. Similar options are also offered by other manufacturers, including Polestar.
It remains unclear whether the practice will expand to other markets, including the U.S. and mainland Europe. Volkswagen plans to first assess the reaction of UK customers.
