Gold Prices Surpass $4,000 for the First Time in History

08.10.2025 News

Global gold prices have surged again, surpassing the psychological threshold of $4,000 per ounce for the first time ever, according to data from the Comex exchange.

As of 3:00 p.m. Kyiv time, December futures were up more than 0.3%, trading at $3,989.3 per ounce, after briefly reaching $4,000.1 per ounce earlier in the day.

Western media report that gold is rising amid political crises in the United States and France. On the eve of the rally, U.S. senators once again failed to pass a bill that would restore government funding and end the ongoing shutdown — with only 52 votes in favor, short of the 60 required for approval.

Meanwhile, Democratic leaders in both the Senate and the House of Representatives stated that they are not negotiating with President Donald Trump about ending the shutdown, despite Trump’s earlier claims that such talks were underway.

In France, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu, who resigned on Monday, said he had agreed at the request of President Emmanuel Macron to hold final talks with political parties to determine whether compromise is still possible. The results of those discussions are expected to be presented to Macron on Wednesday.

Demand for gold — already high amid global economic uncertainty — typically rises during periods of political instability, as the precious metal is viewed as a safe-haven asset.

Gold prices are also supported by expectations of further interest rate cuts by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), which weakens the U.S. dollar and boosts gold’s attractiveness to holders of other currencies.
