Russian missile and drone strikes on October 3 destroyed more than half of Ukraine’s domestic natural gas production, according to a report by Bloomberg.
“According to people familiar with the matter, Kyiv informed its allies earlier this week that the massive Russian bombardment targeting the Kharkiv and Poltava regions on October 3 wiped out roughly 60% of the country’s gas output,” the publication said.
If the attacks continue, sources told Bloomberg, Ukraine may need to purchase around 4.4 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of March, costing nearly €2 billion — roughly 20% of the country’s annual consumption.
Following the strikes, Ukraine urgently appealed to its G7 partners for equipment to repair its energy infrastructure, while once again emphasizing its longstanding requests for additional air defense systems to protect energy facilities. Kyiv is also seeking financial assistance to help cover the cost of gas imports.
Since the start of the year, Ukraine has imported 4.58 billion cubic meters of gas from foreign suppliers, 3.67 billion of which were purchased after the end of the previous heating season. Although Kyiv initially estimated that it would need to import 5.8 billion cubic meters of gas by the end of the year, officials reportedly told allies this week that the number could increase due to Russian attacks.
Meanwhile, Interfax-Ukraine, citing government sources, reported that following the massive Russian strike on gas infrastructure on October 3, Ukraine’s gas production volumes had fallen by about 35%.
