The National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) is facing pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to allow a devaluation of the hryvnia, Bloomberg reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.
“The IMF is emphasizing the benefits of a controlled devaluation of the hryvnia as a step that could help strengthen Ukraine’s strained financial situation by increasing budget revenues denominated in the national currency,” the report said.
Meanwhile, the NBU is resisting such a move, citing risks to inflation and public perception, according to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity because the discussions are being held behind closed doors.
The agency recalls that Ukraine has already received the majority of the $15.6 billion under the IMF program agreed in 2023, and that both sides are now negotiating a new package, which could total $8 billion.
IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva is reportedly planning to visit Kyiv to demonstrate support and reinforce Ukraine’s ambitions for additional financing.
“A devaluation could lead to higher nominal budget revenues, as export contracts are denominated in foreign currencies. However, the projected benefits are limited since Ukraine’s budget largely depends on direct international aid, and devaluation could also trigger inflation, eroding the country’s fiscal resilience,” Bloomberg wrote.
