Tesla met all the criteria, but it was still not included in the S&P 500.
Committee of the S&P Dow Jones Indices refused to include Tesla`s shares in the S&P 500. Such decision was made despite the automaker’s fulfillment of the last criterion to be included in the index – Tesla showed a profit for four consecutive quarters.
Inclusion in the index would make many index funds that are guided by S&P 500, to add the automaker’s securities to the portfolio, which would contribute to further growth of quotations. These expectations have been one of the drivers of Tesla’s growth in the recent months.
Tesla’s shares price since the beginning of the year increased almost six-fold, on August 31 securities worth $ 498 per piece. However, quotes began to fall since last week along with the entire technology sector. And published on Friday night the news of non-inclusion in the S&P 500 index led to a decrease in quotations by another 6.45% on the post market.
Tesla is the sixth largest component of the NASDAQ Composite index and the only large company in the technology sector indicator that is not yet included in the S&P 500 index. Capitalization of the current market of Tesla ($ 389 billion) is higher than 95% of current S&P 500 companies, including Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble. It formed 1.5% of the value of all companies included in the S&P 500, whose total capitalization is $ 27 trillion.
S&P Dow Jones Indices refused to disclose the reasons for Tesla’s non-inclusion in the S&P 500. The reason could be, for example, mistrust of sustainable conservation prospects of profitability producer. Most companies do not enter in the S&P 500 after first achievable profitability for four quarters – but Tesla just did it for the first time in ten years in public status.
