Tesla Employees Warned They Face “the Hardest Year of Their Lives”

19.11.2025 News

Tesla employees working on artificial intelligence systems have been warned that next year will be “the hardest year of their lives.” The statement was made by Ashok Elluswamy, the company’s Vice President of AI Development, during an internal meeting, Business Insider reports. The year 2026 is expected to be a turning point for two of Tesla’s key initiatives — the Robotaxi service and the Optimus robot — and will require an unprecedented level of workload.

During the nearly two-hour gathering, the heads of all AI divisions spoke to employees, outlining aggressive production deadlines for Optimus and plans to deploy a fleet of driverless taxis. One employee described the meeting as a “battle cry” meant to mobilize the team.

According to Elon Musk’s plans, presented during the quarterly earnings call in October, Tesla aims to launch Robotaxi in 8–10 megacities by the end of 2025 and put more than a thousand such vehicles on the road. The company plans to begin production of the humanoid Optimus robot at the end of 2026. Musk acknowledges that scaling will take time due to the complexity of the design: the device consists of roughly 10,000 unique components, and the pace will depend on the “slowest and most temperamental” of them.

The Autopilot and Optimus teams work in the same office and regularly meet with Musk: according to employees, meetings occur weekly and often last into the night. Tesla has not yet commented on the anticipated workload.
