German defense conglomerate Rheinmetall plans to double the capacity of its future Ukrainian plant for producing 155mm artillery shells, which is currently under construction. The announcement was made by the company’s CEO, Armin Papperger.
According to him, the Ukrainian side is seeking to further reduce its dependence on ammunition supplies from Western partners and expand its domestic production.
Initially, the plant was expected to produce 150,000 155mm artillery shells per year, but at the request of the Ukrainian authorities, the decision was made to double that capacity. Within 1–2 years, the facility is expected to reach an output of 300,000 shells annually.
The Rheinmetall plant in Ukraine is scheduled to launch next year. At the same time, Papperger expressed dissatisfaction with the project’s slow progress, blaming Ukrainian bureaucracy. He cited the example of the plant in Unterlüß, Germany, whose construction began simultaneously with the Ukrainian one but has already been completed.
