The European Union is working on a concept for a new class of electric vehicles that could significantly reduce the production cost of compact models. As Carscoops reports, the idea is to create a separate category of “E cars” — small electric vehicles with simplified technical and safety requirements.
The project is still under development, but a preliminary draft is expected to be published soon. According to Nikkei, these “relaxed technical requirements” would allow European automakers to lower production costs and better compete with the wave of budget Chinese EVs rapidly entering the European market.
One of the ideas is to remove some currently mandatory safety systems — for example, driver fatigue monitoring, which is more relevant for long-distance travel than for small urban micro-EVs.
Sources estimate that this alone could reduce the cost of compact electric vehicles by 10–20%. As a result, new European models priced at €15,000–20,000 could appear on the market.
The parameters of the new class are still being defined, but it is assumed that some Japanese kei cars already meet the potential requirements without any modifications — creating export opportunities. Earlier, Donald Trump also expressed interest in bringing kei cars to the U.S. market.
According to Automotive World, the biggest beneficiaries would be Stellantis, Renault, and Volkswagen, which already offer small electric cars and are preparing new models. However, it remains unclear whether these vehicles will fit into the new class.
Even if the proposal is approved, implementation will take years — after publication, the draft will undergo a long bureaucratic process. Under the most optimistic scenario, the first “E-cars” will appear only in a few years.
