U.S. semiconductor manufacturer Qualcomm has announced the acquisition of AI startup Modular in a deal valued at approximately $3.9 billion. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the company’s position in the rapidly expanding artificial intelligence market and help it increase its presence in the data center segment, where Nvidia currently holds a dominant position.
According to Qualcomm, the transaction will be completed as an all-stock deal. Shareholders of Modular will receive approximately 19.2 million Qualcomm shares, with the acquisition expected to close in the second half of 2026.
Modular was founded in Silicon Valley in 2022 by former Google engineers Chris Lattner and Tim Davis. The company develops an AI software platform that enables artificial intelligence models to run efficiently across a wide range of processors and hardware accelerators, regardless of the equipment manufacturer.
Qualcomm believes Modular’s technology will help build a more open AI ecosystem, allowing applications to run seamlessly across cloud data centers, smartphones, personal computers, and other connected devices. This approach is becoming increasingly important as AI services continue to expand and businesses demand more flexible computing infrastructure.
The acquisition forms part of Qualcomm’s broader strategy to strengthen its artificial intelligence capabilities and reduce its reliance on the mobile processor market. The company has been investing heavily in new growth areas and aims to become one of the leading competitors to Nvidia, which currently controls a significant share of the global AI chip and AI training infrastructure market.
The deal also reflects the ongoing race among the world’s largest technology companies to secure cutting-edge AI technologies. In recent years, semiconductor manufacturers have aggressively acquired promising startups to gain access to innovative technologies and highly skilled engineering teams. Earlier, Qualcomm also announced the acquisition of the UK-based Alphawave IP Group for approximately $2.4 billion.
