The European Commission has agreed to review the conditions under which additional tariffs are imposed on Volkswagen Group vehicles assembled in China, Carscoops reports. Instead of the standard tariff, the company proposes introducing an import quota and a minimum price mechanism.

The request was submitted by Volkswagen Anhui — a joint venture between VW and China’s JAC that produces the Cupra Tavascan electric crossover. The company says current tariffs pose a “serious threat” to its business. If Brussels supports the proposal, the Tavascan could be exempt from the 20.7% tariff within the next few months. However, it remains unclear whether VW’s arguments will convince EU officials.

Currently, imports of electric vehicles from China to the EU face significant taxes. In addition to the base 10% duty, an anti-dumping tariff is applied — 20.7% for VW. For other manufacturers, the rates are even higher: 35.3% for SAIC, 18.8% for Geely, and 17% for BYD.

Even if the tariff is removed, a new minimum-price mechanism is unlikely to be an easier alternative: the European Commission emphasizes that any minimum pricing must be just as effective and enforceable as existing tariffs.
