Germany’s largest defense contractor, Rheinmetall, intends to increase its annual revenue from €9.8 billion in 2024 to €50 billion by 2030. The plan was announced by CEO Armin Papperger during a presentation to financial analysts in Unterlüß, where Rheinmetall’s largest production facility is located.
The company links its growing volume of orders primarily to Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine. Demand for artillery, armored vehicles, air defense systems, and ammunition is rising across all NATO countries.
Before the war, in 2021, Rheinmetall’s revenue stood at €5.7 billion, and it has nearly doubled since then.
A peaceful resolution of the war in Ukraine would not halt this trend; Western militaries will continue expanding their armaments for many years, Papperger believes.
According to him, the company plans a substantial increase in production: annual output of 120mm tank ammunition is expected to rise from 60,000 to 240,000 rounds, and production of 155mm artillery shells — from 70,000 to 1.5 million by 2030.
Rheinmetall is also preparing to completely abandon its civilian direction: its automotive division, which has been underperforming, has been put up for sale.
