In Germany, Telegram faces a fine of 55 million euros because the company does not have a contact person who would be obliged to communicate with the state to distribute content that violates the law. Der Spiegel reported this.
If the company refuses to cooperate with the German authorities, the application may be blocked in the country.
The German Ministry of Justice requires, in particular, that the messenger promptly remove illegal content in posts and actively share user data, as this is necessary for investigations. The Federal Department of Justice, which is controlled by the Ministry of Justice, has opened proceedings against Telegram.
At the moment, the German authorities know the address of the messenger’s office in Dubai, but investigators say that it makes no sense to send inquiries there, when they intended to find out who was behind the account in the messenger on which they were committing crimes.
