German automaker Mercedes-Benz reported a 56% drop in net profit in the first half of the year — from €6.1 billion to €2.7 billion. The company also forecasts further declines in revenue and sales volumes.
Key reasons for the decline include high tariffs, falling sales volumes, and increased costs related to efficiency improvement programs.
Revenue for the first half of the year fell by 8.6% to €66.4 billion. Operating profit (EBIT) also dropped nearly 55%, from €7.9 billion to €3.6 billion.
The company expects its annual revenue to be significantly lower than last year. Mercedes-Benz predicts that its operating margin in the passenger car segment in 2025 will be 4–6%, compared to 8.1% the previous year. A significant decline in sales volumes is also anticipated.
Profitability issues began back in 2024, when the company’s net profit fell by 28% to €10.4 billion. At that time, revenue declined by 4.5% to €145.6 billion, while operating profit fell by nearly a third to €13.6 billion — largely due to weak performance in the Chinese market.
In February, company leadership announced a cost-cutting plan aimed at reducing production expenses by 10% by 2027, optimizing material costs, and cutting fixed costs by another 10%.
Mercedes-Benz also reached an agreement with its works council on a package of measures, including a voluntary exit program for employees in non-production (indirect) departments.
