U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States government has agreed to purchase a 10% stake in Intel, which is currently in financial difficulty, Reuters reports. According to him, this is only the first step in a planned series of large-scale government investments in strategic companies.
Official confirmation of the deal is expected later, a source familiar with the matter said. The decision reportedly followed a meeting between Trump and Intel CEO Lip-Bu Tan in early August. At that time, the president demanded the CEO’s resignation due to his previous ties with Chinese firms. “He came to the meeting to keep his job, and in the end, he handed us $10 billion for the United States,” Trump said.
Lip-Bu Tan, who took over Intel in March this year, was tasked with pulling the legendary company out of crisis. In 2024, Intel reported an annual loss of $18.8 billion — its first since 1986. The company last recorded a positive adjusted free cash flow in 2021.
Intel’s shares rose more than 6% after the announcement. The company itself declined to comment.
Analysts believe that government support could give Intel more time to revive its struggling contract chipmaking division. However, the company still faces challenges — from a weak product roadmap to difficulties attracting clients for its new fabs.
