Harley-Davidson Inc., the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the United States, has announced its plans to cut about 700 jobs worldwide as part of a global business reorganization caused by the economic crisis due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the company press release, the restructuring plan expected to reduce its global staff by about 13% will incur costs of about $42 million in the second quarter.
Harley-Davidson resumed plant operations a few weeks ago in a reduced production environment. The company limited the range of motorcycles supplied to dealers. Plants and most Harley dealerships closed in March as part of restrictions to curb the spread of coronavirus. The company notes that the reduction is part of a broader strategic plan and is not related to the impact of the pandemic on the economy.
According to the report, transition to a more streamlined organization requires a reduction in the number of employees worldwide by about 700 people with about 500 employees expected to leave the company by the end of this year. The global state of Harley-Davidson has about 5,600 employees.
It is also reported that Harley-Davidson Chief Financial Officer John Olin left the company as part of the announced changes. He had held this position since 2009. Harley-Davidson Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Darrell Thomas will handle CFO’s duties until a successor is found.
The company promises to talk in more detail about its restructuring plan later this month when its quarterly report is published.
