Oil prices are falling amid signs that the United States is easing Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, potentially reopening crude supplies from Middle Eastern countries, Reuters reports.
“Oil prices fell by more than 1% on Tuesday after rising as much as 6% in the previous session, amid signs that the U.S. Navy is loosening Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz, potentially reopening crude supplies from Middle Eastern countries,” the report said.
Brent crude futures for July delivery dropped by $1.22, or 1.1%, to $113.22 per barrel, after gaining 5.8% on Monday. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell by $2.02, or 1.9%, to $104.40, following a 4.4% increase in the previous session.
However, Iran launched attacks in the Persian Gulf on Monday in response to U.S. efforts to gain control over the Strait of Hormuz.
Several commercial vessels were hit in the area, and a key oil port in the United Arab Emirates was damaged following an Iranian strike.
The United States is pushing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to ease major disruptions in global energy supplies, after Iran largely closed the waterway following the launch of a military operation by the U.S. and Israel on February 28.
Some analysts attribute Tuesday’s slight decline in oil prices to profit-taking.
