The plans were outlined by Ivan Fugas, CEO of the state-owned company LNG Croatia, in an interview with Bloomberg.

According to Fugas, the company intends to hold an auction for additional terminal capacity in the first quarter of next year.

“We plan to launch an auction for increased capacity in the first quarter of next year, with contracts running through 2040. The expansion of our terminal could best serve Ukraine,” Fugas said.

The terminal is located on the Adriatic island of Krk. Croatia plans to increase its commercial capacity by 1 billion cubic meters of gas per year, bringing the total to 4.5 billion cubic meters annually. The expanded capacity is expected to become available in early 2027.

Fugas noted that Ukraine could benefit from this supply route, particularly during the winter months, when gas demand rises and Russian attacks on the country’s energy infrastructure affect domestic gas production.

“LNG Croatia’s prices are among the lowest in Europe, especially when considering the combined costs of the terminal and pipeline transportation,” he said.

The terminal’s existing capacity has already been booked by Croatian energy companies and several Hungarian customers through 2036. Fugas added that if demand remains strong after the new auction, Croatia may consider a further expansion of the facility.

The United States remains the terminal’s primary source of LNG, accounting for approximately two-thirds of total supplies.
